Why Vitamin D Supplements Should Be Readily Available?

There is a continuous movement that is supported by various health organizations that recommends Vitamin D supplements to be readily available in the market. Just recently, United Kingdom reported that there is a growing incidence of Vitamin K deficiency based from the report of the Royal College of Pediatrics and Child Health or RCPCH. According to the report, vitamin D deficiency affects approximately half of the Caucasian population in UK.

The data shows that one fourth of children and around 90 percent of multi-ethnic population are at risk for Vitamin D deficiency.  Pediatricians are worried that this may lead to a higher incidence of diabetes, rickets, tuberculosis and multiple sclerosis. A recent report published early this year, have warned health authorities that there is a possibility of rickets to recur in the United Kingdom.

Physicians are also concerned about increasing levels of vitamin D deficiency in the country. A recent report confirmed that there is a four-fold increase in rickets incidents which is not common in UK since the 19th century.  Rickets is a bone disease due to lack of vitamin D.  Kids, teenagers and pregnant women have a critical need for Vitamin D.

Mitch Blair, a professor and officer of the Health Promotion of RCPCH mentioned that deficiency in Vitamin D poses concern among health care professionals.  Local research has shown an alarming increase of Vitamin D deficiency among certain group of population including children. The problem with this vitamin is that people can get only a little amount of this vitamin from the food they ate.  Without the aid of the sunlight Vitamin D will not be processed and absorbed by the body.

Eating foods rich in vitamin D and or exposing yourself under the sun, is not totally effective in treating Vitamin D deficiency.  One should take vitamin D supplement to prevent the occurrence of serious illnesses caused by lack of this vitamin. Thus, healthcare professionals recommend the widespread availability of high quality yet inexpensive Vitamin D supplements.

They also suggest the exploration of the benefits and possible effects of foods fortified with Vitamin D.  Clinicians should also have a guideline on how to diagnose and treat diseases that are linked with Vitamin D deficiency.  It is also important to have an awareness program for the public so parents would know the warning signs and symptoms of Vitamin D deficiency and how to prevent it.

Clinicians also pointed out the importance of conducting research that linked Vitamin D deficiency to bone disease.  Presently, physicians are having difficulty in treating this illness particularly the high profile cases because of lack of studies in this area. Health officials also recommend extensive observations on the effects of Vitamin deficiency in the population.

In fact, the Chief Medical Officer in the UK also recommends that all breastfeeding and pregnant women, kid’s ages 6 months to five years and people over 65 years old should be given Vitamin D supplements. The UK government also started a “Healthy Start” program that provided free vitamins to “at risk groups” and low-income families. Slowly, they are trying to do what other countries are doing; they are making Vitamin D widely available to the general population.

Thus, it is very important for health care professionals to easily identify the signs and symptoms of Vitamin D deficiency such as aches and pains, poor growth, seizures and muscle weakness for them to treat the patient effectively. Extensive campaign for Vitamin D deficiency is also requested for clinicians so they can educate the public. As of now, UK is exploring the possibility of fortification of foods and drinks with Vitamin D, as what Canada, Finland and United States have done.

The actions in UK have prove the importance of making vitamin D supplements readily available in the market.  Hence, this has encouraged more researches about Vitamin D.  In fact, a recent study showed that Vitamin D can provide relief for those affected with chronic hives.

The new research indicates that if Vitamin D is added as one of the therapy for chronic hives it could offer some relief.  Chronic hives is a condition that creates itchy, redness and swelling on the skin.  It is an allergic condition with few only treatment options available.

Chronic hives may occur daily and may even last for six weeks or longer.  The researchers found out that Vitamin D3 helps the severity of chronic hives symptoms by almost 30 %.  A stronger dose can reduce the severity of the symptoms by 40%.  The study was presented by researchers at the University of Nebraska Medical Center.

The studies on Vitamin D supplement as potential add-on therapy to various diseases is clinically significant for health care.  The findings have proven that Vitamin D is essential in preventing the occurrence of rickets and other debilitating illnesses. Healthcare professional should not feel comfortable because even if Vitamin D deficiency is not observed for quite some time, it does not mean that it will not recur.

Deficiency exists because people are not aware on how to take the right amount of vitamins that they needed for their overall health. Awareness is the key to prevent the occurrence of any debilitating illnesses.  Vitamin D is crucial because it affects wide range of population including pregnant and breastfeeding women, children, and the older population.
